Say Good Bye to An Hour of Sleep!

In the Southwest WA, we really do get a great benefit from Daylight Savings Time…but twice a year it is frustrating to scrambling at 11:00 at night to find that manual to change the clocks…or screw up all your radio pre-sets the next afternoon trying to remember how to change the dang thing.

Most people know that the roots of this bi-yearly tradition comes from farming, but what people may not know is that this is no longer federally mandated and each state has the choice to observe or abstain from Daylight Savings.

Most of the U.S. change their clocks twice a year – one hour forward in the spring and one hour back in fall. However, the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands, Hawaii and most of Arizona do nothing.

A FEW FACTS

The federal law concerning Daylight Savings first passed in 1918

In 1883 the railroad industry established official time zones with a set standard time within each zone. This later became mandated when in 1918, the U.S. Congress signed the railroad time zone system into law, including the nationwide observance of Daylight Saving Time.

Apparently there were differing opinions on how this was observed, but it took until 1966, for Congress to pass the Uniform Time Act, standardizing the start and end dates for Daylight Saving Time but allowing individual states to follow just standard time if their state legislatures allowed it.

In 1972 an amendment to all this craziness extended the choice to not to observe Daylight Saving Time to areas on the border of two time zones but within the same U.S. state.

All in all today it is not a federally mandated…it is a state legistated choice…so what to do? Well besides moving to a new location that has decided to free themselves from this tradition, you can always write your state senate or local congressman…but if that fails…it might be a good idea to put all your electronic manuals in one file folder and place it someplace noteable…that way you don’t have to curse the exisitence of this crazy habit and can go to bed knowing you will wake up to the correct time

Looking forward to gaining that hour back in the fall!
